
Kurdistan - Erbil
Erbil is the most popular city and it is the capital of the Kurdistan Region Of Iraq. Erbil city is dated back to the 5th millennium BC, which would make the city one of the oldest continuously inhabited area in the world. The city is located at the height of 418 m above sea level. The name of Erbil city has been found in the Sumerian transcripts with different shapes and Sumerian Alphabetic such as Urbilam, Arbil, Urbl and Arballo. The city was the main station for the God Ishtar which was the main goddess worshiped at the era. Most of the historians and researchers have studied the history of this important city, and is regarded an important subject for many artists archeologists and other researchers from around the world.
Erbil city is located east of Sulaymaniyah Governorate and it is only 350 Km north of Baghdad- the capital of Iraq. It borders Nineveh Governorated to the east and Duhok in the north. Kirkuk city is south of Erbil. The total area of Erbil is 1524 KM2 and has a population of around 1 Million. It has two museums one located at Erbil citadel which contains about 40 antique artifacts and ancient heritag. The second one is in the city of Erbil which includes about 5000 ancient artifacts deep rooted in history. The city has may other modern landmarks such as shopping malls, restaurants ,markets, hotels, and universities.

Great Experience Erbil Citadel
It lies in the middle of Erbil city. It has a round shape with its buildings and dwellings; 30 m high. It dates back to over 6000 years BC. Hundreds of families live on the Citadel; there are 506 houses distributed over three quarters (Sarai Q., Takya Q. & Top khana Q.). They were built in artistic styles of architecture, particularly the houses of (Hashim Dabbagh Agha, Mulla Salim Chalabi, Ahmad Chalabi, Sheikh Jameel Ali Afandi, Haji Rasheed Agha). Additionally, there are the Great Mosque and Citadel Bath built in 1775 AD. The Citadel was famous for having most of the idols and was a centre for heroic deeds by the modern civilization figures; also, it was wellknown as Defeated Holako's Castle. However, normal life is still ongoing in the Citadel. As discovered by archaeologists, the Citadel holds many significant remains of various historical races; 5000 year-old relics can be found within its inside parts, but have not yet been researched fully.

It has many interesting places like the Bazaar Qeysariya with its open market and stands for selling a wide variety of local produce. Within Koya region there is a place named Qshla.
Qshla is located in the center of Koya City. Reservhers differ on the date of its foundation . Some related to the Mamalik era while other believe it was constructed in the second half of the 19th century during the rule of the Ottoman Governor Midhat Pasha of Baghdad.

Shaqlawa is located 51Km to the northeast of Erbil City between Safeen mountain and Sork mountains. It is known as a popular destination for Iraqi people due to its nature, waterfalls, springs, trees and greenery. It has a beautiful nature and climate as it is cooler during the summer which attracts many tourists during the hot summer season from across Iraq and expats. The town has many restaurants, shops, and hotels. The predominant population of Shaqlawa is Kurdish and Assyrians who belong to the Chaldean Church. This makes the area traditionally multicultural and tolerant society friendly towards foreigners.

Khanzad Citadel
is about 22 Km from Erbil off road to Shaqlawa. It was a home for princess Khanzad and her brother, prince Suleman Beg who built the castle during the Soran Emirate of the 16th century. Made of stone and gypsum it has kept much of its original structure and remains a stunning archeological site.

Soran is situated in the triangular area between Iran, Iraq and Turkey. Several major mountain ranges surround the area, including the mountains of Hendrin, Zozik, Hassen Bak, Bradust and Korek. The area has two main rivers, one that flows to Haji Umran on the Iranian borer, and another that follows the path to the Mergasor region.

Bradost Mountain

This site is located 66 km north-northeast of Erbil and 115 km southeast of Dohuk. The site can be reached by taking the main road north from Erbil and following the road towards Barzan. The mountain has an altitude of 389 to 1345m.Climbing the Bradost is absolutely breath taking. Novice hikers will be pleased to learn that one side of the mountain is not as steep as its other challenging side, therefore it is easy to climb and hike at your own pace. The name Bradost, literally means “close friend”, and has remained a close friend of the Kurdish people during their struggles against oppressive regimes. As you reach the peak of the mountain, you are taken back with adrenaline and excitement, hikers will notice that one side of the mountain has sudden drop and a deep valley. The drop leads directly into a large deep valley. Only when you reach the top of the mountain do you truly experience the majestic grandeur of Bradost. The mountain covers a wonderful area in all seasons and provides an unforgettable experience.

This cave has an impressive history, dating back to the Stone Age. It is believed that the Neanderthal people used to reside within this cave. To access this site, one must drive either on the road through Spilk Mountain towards Khallan or from the Kali Ali Bag Strait by the westbound road between Hawdian and Sardaw. This cave has not been excavated to date.

Shanadar Cave is located on the Bradost Mountain in Mirgasor district. Famous for its triangular shape, the cave is 2,200 m above sea level, 18 meters high and 40 meters deep. It is thought to be one of the largest and most ancient caves in Iraq, dating back to 60,000 B.C. The Kurdish Peshmerga used the cave as a hideout during revolutionary times. The cave was first excavated in 1951 when archaeologists managed to date it by analyzing its stone layers.

Ali Begg Valley

Situated around 95 km from Erbil, off the road to Soran, this valley lies between the Korek and Bradost Mountains. It is 12 km long with spectacular views, such as springs and waterfalls. The famed Gali waterfall is located in this valley which is a popular site for tourists from all around the country to visit. There is also several restaurants and cafes near the valley built to accommodate visitors.

Barzan is famous for its landscapes, which attract visitors year round. Roaming mountain animals accompanied by a shepherd are also a common sight in the mountains around Barzan.
